NFTs in 2026: I Changed My Mind About Them (Here's Why)

Confession: I Thought NFTs Were Stupid

Two years ago I was that person rolling my eyes at every Bored Ape tweet. "Why would anyone pay $200k for a cartoon monkey??"

And honestly ? That part still doesn't make sense to me.

But I've actually used NFTs for other stuff now, and... okay. Some of it is legit useful.

What NFTs Actually Are(No Buzzwords)

An NFT is just proof that you own a specific digital thing.That's it.

The JPEG part that everyone mocks ? That's just one use case. NFTs can represent anything: a concert ticket, a game item, membership to a community, a share of something.

The key difference from regular files: you can verify ownership, transfer it to someone else, and(sometimes) sell it.That's... actually useful.

The Stuff That Actually Works

Gaming items: This one makes total sense to me.You grind for hours to get a rare sword.With NFTs, you actually OWN it.Can sell it, trade it, use it in different games(theoretically).Way better than the old "you legally own nothing" model.

Access passes: Some communities use NFTs as membership cards.You buy in, get access to Discord channels, events, perks.When you're done, sell the NFT. Actually pretty clever.

Concert tickets: No more scalpers ? Okay maybe still scalpers, but at least transparent ones.And artists can get a cut of resales.

Art: Look, I still don't fully get the $500k digital art thing. But for artists selling $50-500 pieces directly to fans? That rules actually.

The Stuff That's Still Dumb

Profile picture speculation.Most of those projects are dead now.Called it.

"NFT real estate in the metaverse." Come on.

Any project where the main pitch is "it'll go up in value." That's a red flag for anything, not just NFTs.

How to Actually Buy One(If You Want)

You'll need ETH in MetaMask, then:

1. Go to OpenSea, Blur, or Magic Eden
2. Connect wallet
3. Find something you actually like(crazy concept, I know)
4. Click buy, confirm, done

Gas fees can be brutal on Ethereum.Cheaper options exist on Polygon, Solana, or Base.

My Current Take

Are most NFTs worthless ? Yep.Is the tech sometimes genuinely useful ? Also yep.

I own a few now — mostly gaming stuff and one community pass.Total value: like $300.I'm not trying to flip anything, just using them for what they're designed for.

Don't buy NFTs as "investments" (that era is dead). Buy them if they actually do something you want.
