Unpopular Opinion: Most People Should Just Use Coinbase
π In This Article
Yes, I know β not your keys, not your coins. But here's the uncomfortable truth about self-custody that crypto Twitter doesn't want to admit.
I'm about to get ratio'd for this, but here we go:
Most people should not be self - custodying their crypto.
There, I said it.
The Self - Custody Fantasy
Crypto Twitter makes it sound simple: "Just get a hardware wallet, write down your seed phrase, never share it, verify all transactions, check contract addresses, revoke approvals regularly, use a hardware wallet for signing..."
And if you mess up any step ? Your money is gone.Forever.No customer support.
For crypto natives who live on - chain 24 / 7, this is fine. For a normal person trying to save some money in Bitcoin ? This is insane.
The Uncomfortable Reality
I've been in crypto since 2017. I know what I'm doing.I STILL almost got phished last year.Clicked a fake signing request, stopped myself at the last second.
If it can almost happen to me, your uncle who just wants some Bitcoin exposure has no chance.
Every week I see stories: seed phrase lost, hardware wallet broken, approved a malicious contract, sent to wrong address.
These are not edge cases. They're common.
When Coinbase Actually Makes Sense
- You're buying and holding long-term
- You don't need to use DeFi
- You're not technically inclined
- You're storing <$50k (below the custody guarantee)
- You want regulatory protection if something goes wrong
For these people, Coinbase is genuinely safer than self - custody. They're more likely to lose their seed phrase than Coinbase is to get hacked.
When Self - Custody Is Right
- You're actively using DeFi
- You're storing significant amounts (>$100k)
- You actually understand what you're doing
- You have proper backup systems in place
- You're willing to lose everything if you mess up
If all these apply, yes, self - custody.Otherwise... maybe not.
The Third Option Nobody Talks About
Multi - sig with friends / family.Shared custody. If you lose your key, your trusted people can help recover. If one of them goes rogue, they still can't drain your wallet.
This is how wealthy people should be doing it.But it requires technical setup and social coordination.
My Setup(Full Transparency)
- Trading funds: CEX(convenient, accepted risk)
- Medium term: Hardware wallet(Ledger)
- Long - term holdings: Multi - sig with family
Not pure self - custody. But realistic for my threat model.
The goal is to not lose your money.Pick whatever arrangement makes that most likely for your situation.
