I Survived Three Scam Attempts This Week (And You Will Too β Here's How)
π In This Article
Monday: phishing site. Wednesday: fake airdrop. Friday: Discord DM. Being in crypto means being a constant target. Here's what I've learned about staying safe.
This week alone:
Monday : Got a Google ad for a fake Uniswap that looked pixel - perfect.Spotted it because the URL was slightly off.
Wednesday : Someone airdropped a token to my wallet worth "$50,000." It was a honeypot that would've drained my wallet if I tried to sell.
Friday : Discord DM from "support" offering to fix a "problem with my wallet." Obvious scam but creative.
Welcome to crypto in 2026.
Why Scams Are Getting Smarter
The old "Nigerian prince" email scams were obvious.Modern crypto scams are professional operations:
- Fake websites that are pixel - perfect clones
- Ads that appear on Google before real results
- Malicious tokens sent directly to your wallet
- Fake support staff with usernames nearly identical to real ones
- AI - generated voice calls impersonating CEXs
The attackers are well - funded and sophisticated. This is their full - time job.
My Personal Rules(Built From Close Calls)
Never click links. Ever.I manually type URLs for anything financial.Bookmark it and use the bookmark.
Assume every airdrop is malicious. If you didn't expect it, ignore it. Don't interact with random tokens.
Disable DMs by default. Nothing legitimate comes through Discord or Telegram DMs.Nothing.
Use a separate browser for crypto. No extensions, no saved passwords, nothing that could be compromised.
Verify everything twice. Even if a transaction looks right, double check the address.Scammers can change what's displayed.
The Scams That Almost Got Me
I'm not immune. Close calls I've had:
- Nearly signed a "token approval" that would've drained my wallet. The UI looked legitimate.
- Almost sent ETH to an address that was 1 character different from the real one.
- Clicked on a "urgent security alert" email that was 100 % convincing.Stopped myself before entering my seed phrase.
Everyone gets targeted. The difference is whether you catch it in time.
What Actually Protects You
Hardware wallets : Even if you approve something malicious, a hardware wallet makes you confirm on - device.Extra step = extra protection.
Small test transactions : Before sending anything significant, send a tiny amount first.
revoke.cash : Regularly check and revoke old token approvals.Past approvals can be exploited later.
Two devices : Use one device for signing and one for browsing.Never both on the same machine.
The Uncomfortable Truth
Crypto's biggest threat isn't regulation or bear markets. It's that normal people can't use it safely.
Until that changes, we're not going mainstream. Every scam that drains someone's wallet sets adoption back.
Protect yourself. And if you're building in crypto: make security easier, not harder.
